Why Midlife Awakening Happens
I’m going to say this, whether you like it or not..
Most people aren’t living as their true self.
There you go, I said it.
You’re most likely playing a role shaped by family, culture, expectations…
out of fear, out of survival.
Performing as a character and saying lines that aren’t really yours.
And funnily enough, you haven’t really noticed you’re doing it either.
And now people know you as that person.
Your friends, your parents, your work colleagues, your partner, your children…
They reinforce it too – in the way they relate to you, what they expect from you and how they see you.
That becomes your identity.
But is it?
(Wow… this is deep).
When you think about it, you might have some vague awareness this all started when you were young. But probably it was unconscious at the time.
That at some point you were faced with two paths.
One path was the path of who you truly are - where the things you actually thought, felt, and wanted to say live.
The other was the path that kept the peace.
That kept you safe.
And in choosing that safer path, you slipped into a costume.
A bit like Mr Ben in the fancy dress shop.
Except the costume slowly became… you.
Or at least the version of you the world has learned to recognise.
For a long time, this has worked perfectly well.
In fact, the first half of life your life was probably about building that character.
Learning the rules.
Fitting in.
Becoming someone who can function in the world.
But somewhere along the way something important got lost.
The true version of you.
The part of you that existed from the very beginning.
The authentic version of you.
The part of you that knows what really matters.
And midlife is often the moment that part begins tapping on the glass.
And once it starts tapping, it tends not to stop.
